Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces growing in influence within the city.

Warning: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of characters who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (portrayed by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

What Defines the Combat Party

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise started the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each member has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to eliminate the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as important members in the influential clan could assist the team enter places they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor pledged a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that rule the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and Wicander defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by House Halovar.

This results in them no alternative but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Questers and Schemers parties.

Fans can look forward to finding out which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
