Donald Trump's Framework of Consequences and Incentives

Trump's voracious urge for payback has quickly transformed into a organized framework. Within the past year, the chief executive's rage and impulses have assumed the guise of administrative measures in ways reminiscent to historical repressive regimes. Government figures who resist his demands are promptly fired and substituted by devotees. Political leaders who question him encounter prosecution, judicial process and sanctions. Opponents have been designated under executive directives as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with criminal charges as “extremists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

Each situation involving legal action of political opponents and leniency for his allies displays its own unique characteristics. However, notwithstanding their specific character, they embody manifestations of what has developed as a calculated method. These events are not random. His purge of DoJ lawyers and Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel, accompanied by his installation of supporters in senior posts, began quickly, soon assumed a regularity, and has now been molded into a structure. Federal prosecutors and the FBI have been transformed into political agencies under his direct command to execute his wishes. Unfairness has been rendered standard. It constitutes the retribution system.

Management is more concerned with punishing the chief's supposed adversaries than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Inside the Apparatus

The beginnings of this system has been uncovered in the court filing of several ex- high-ranking law enforcement executives lodged in September in the judicial system in DC against agency head Kash Patel and attorney general Pam Bondi for unlawful firing in “a initiative of retribution against Plaintiffs for what Defendants deemed to be a inability to show adequate political loyalty”. In the complaint that one official, the former temporary head, details a discussion in which Patel “openly admitted the unlawfulness of his conduct”.

The official had sought to defend law enforcement officers from being terminated, the lawsuit states. Patel informed him that “White House figures” – interpreted by the official to be the executive branch and DoJ – had directed him to remove anyone who they considered as having worked on a criminal investigation against the president. The complaint adds: “The director clarified that he had to terminate the people his bosses told him to remove, because his ability to retain his own job depended on the dismissal of the officials who worked on investigations involving the President. The director noted that there was no option he or the official could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the agency attempted to place the chief in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” After Driscoll advised the director he was violating the agency's own regulations, Patel allegedly said “he recognized that and he realized the nature of the immediate dismissals were probably illegal”.

Widespread Effects

Since the director's alleged acknowledgment to him, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been gutted and reorganized for the administration's retribution system. Six of the bureau's top officials were fired or pushed out in the initial period of the administration. Roughly 4,500 professional attorneys at the department have taken a “voluntary departure plan”. At least multiple government attorneys, such as those in the southern district of New York, quit in protest over what they viewed as partisan influence in abandoning the corruption case against the local official, Eric Adams, in return for his cooperation with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The ethics division of DoJ, which handles misconduct investigations, has been cut down to a handful of lawyers. The civil rights division has been decimated: seventy percent of its employees has left. 33% of top officials at the department have resigned. The unit implementing environmental law has seen departures of 50% its leadership.

Favors and Punishments

Regarding the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, she, resigned in dissent against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. The border official, Trump's “enforcement chief,” was present as the agent with Adams on a media outlet to state: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll be back in NYC.”. Meanwhile, another figure, previously the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who brokered the agreement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a likely pathway to the judicial branch.

His immunity for crimes perpetrated while in government, provided by the extraordinary decision of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus blocking his prosecution over the Capitol riot and maintaining his electoral prospects for the presidential race, is the basis on which he stands to protect his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to authorize wrongdoing. The consequence of the court judgment infuses his presidency and the political party completely. The court matter has spread. In the words of Richard Nixon's administration lawyer John Dean commented about the Watergate
